What to Expect

Starting from the Kennicott Mill Town, the Root Glacier Trail eases you along an old mining road before threading through boreal forest with views that make you stop mid-sentence. The path is mostly flat and well-trodden for the first couple of miles, then transitions to rocky moraine as you approach the glacier itself. The elevation gain is gentle — think a steady staircase, not a wall — spread across the full six-mile round trip. Once you reach the glacier's edge, the landscape shifts dramatically: ice stretches out before you in rippled blue-white sheets, with crevasses and moulins carved by meltwater. You can walk onto the glacier itself if conditions allow, though venturing far without crampons and a guide is asking for trouble. This trail is perfect for hikers who want a genuine glacial encounter without mountaineering credentials — the kind of place that makes you feel small in the best possible way.

Safety Advisory

Do not venture onto the glacier beyond the marked edge without crampons, an ice axe, and ideally a guide — hidden crevasses are real and have swallowed experienced hikers. Several outfitters in Kennicott offer guided glacier walks.

The moraine is loose and unstable in places, with rocks that shift underfoot. Watch for falling debris near the glacier's lateral edges, especially on warm afternoons when ice melt destabilizes the surrounding rock.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early in the morning before guided glacier groups hit the trail — you'll have the moraine approach and glacier edge largely to yourself before 10 AM.

Trail Tip

Bring trekking poles for the rocky moraine section near the glacier — the loose rock and uneven terrain near the ice edge will punish your ankles without them. Sturdy boots with ankle support are non-negotiable here.

Trail Tip

The junction where the trail meets the glacier offers a stunning photo angle back toward Kennicott and the Wrangell Mountains — turn around and shoot behind you before you get mesmerized by the ice.
