What to Expect

This is one of Alaska's great introductory wilderness walks — a flat, gravelly old wagon road that threads through boreal forest from the McCarthy footbridge toward the historic Kennecott Mill Town, with a spur trail branching off to the toe of the Kennicott Glacier. The walking is easy and the terrain is forgiving, but the scenery is absolutely outrageous: you're hemmed in by some of the biggest mountains on the continent, with the glacier's rubble-covered snout creeping into view as you approach. The glacier toe itself is a strange, otherworldly landscape of ice caves, meltwater streams, and rock-covered ice that looks more like a moonscape than a frozen river. The mill town spur delivers you to one of the best-preserved mining ghost towns in America, its red buildings stacked against the mountainside like a vertical village. This trail is perfect for anyone who wants a big Alaska experience without a big Alaska sufferfest.

Safety Advisory

Do not climb on or enter ice caves at the glacier toe — they collapse without warning, and fatalities have occurred. Admire from a safe distance and stay behind any posted barriers.

Bear activity is common along the wagon road corridor, particularly in late summer when berries ripen. Carry bear spray, make noise on blind corners, and store food properly if you're lingering for a picnic.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The walk from McCarthy to Kennecott is roughly five miles one way along the old wagon road — most people arrange a shuttle back through one of the local lodges or the bus service rather than doubling the mileage on foot.

Trail Tip

Hit the glacier toe spur in the afternoon when the sun angles light up the exposed blue ice along the face — morning shadow hides the best features. Bring trekking poles for the loose moraine near the ice.

Trail Tip

Budget time at the Kennecott Mill Town for the ranger-led tour if one is running — the 14-story concentration mill is staggering, and the guided walk through the buildings adds context you won't get from the outside.
